It Is Not Too Early to Schedule a Pediatric Dental Exam
Baby teeth play an important role in a child's health and their development. Scheduling a pediatric dental exam can help make sure that they are growing in correctly and that they are healthy.
It is not too early to bring a child to the dentist
When it comes to oral health, one of the biggest and most common mistakes parents make is to wait too long to implement an oral hygiene routine and to bring their child to the dentist. We tell parents that it is never too early to schedule an exam. Since we focus on providing pediatric dental care, we are skilled at working with very young children. We help them remain comfortable, have a pleasant experience and stay healthy. As long as a child has teeth, they can visit the dentist. It is that simple.
Why early dental care is important
We recommend scheduling a pediatric dental exam when a child is a toddler. Here is why:
1. They have teeth and teeth can suffer tooth decay
Tooth decay is not something that only impacts adults and older youth. To the contrary, no teeth are immune from suffering decay. Anyone, regardless of age, can get cavities or dental infections. This includes very young children. So, just like adults need to employ proper oral hygiene and visit the dentist, children do as well. Bringing a child to our office twice a year will be one of the best things a parent can do to help prevent these types of oral health problems.
2. Children are adaptable
When children are young, everything is new. They are encountering new things, having new experiences and developing their belief system about how the world works. We want part of that process to involve visiting the dentist. If a child can visit our office when they are young, they will not know any different. They will simply believe that going to the dentist is part of normal life, so be sure to do so regularly and they are likely to even enjoy it. Dental anxiety is a real problem that is faced by many adults, and we want to prevent this. The best way to do so is to simply treat children at an early age.
3. We want to make sure their teeth are growing incorrectly
Another important aspect of a pediatric dental exam is making sure the child's teeth are growing in correctly. If they are not, we want to identify this early and work with parents to create a treatment plan that may involve future orthodontic care. Knowledge is power, so as soon as these issues are identified, parents can begin to understand what will be necessary in the future and begin to prepare for it.
